Dan Bergman, NJ USA

“Art is important because it is humanity’s conversation about reasons to live; if we don’t find and share redeeming inspirations and consolations we are just trudging numbly through a lifetime of feeding and reproducing until death releases us.”

About Dan Bergman
I began sculpting full time in 1988 after a 25-year career in business (Macy’s). I’m originally from Chicago, grew up mostly in Cleveland and attended Ohio State University. I live in New York City and my studio is across the river in Guttenberg, NJ.

Some recurring themes in my sculpture are:

  • tension, created through top-heavy forms, stretching and twisting, patterns of colors and rhythms that are interrupted or discordant
  • evocative places, suggested by landscapes, imaginary buildings, enigmatic figures
  • kinetic movement, hinting at underlying natural forces behind what we see
