DEAR ATHENA,

I THINK THIS IDEA OF MAKING ART MORE ACCESSABLE THROUGH YOUR WEB SITE IS``fantastica!`` ALSO AS YOU SAID WE WILL BE MORE AWARE TO WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE ART WORLD. CONGRATULATIONS AND WHEN WE WILL MEET AGAIN WE WILL REALIZE WE HAVE THIS IN COMMON. ATHENA I DID NOT KNOW YOU HAD A MASTER IN THE
ART FIELD. I TOOK HISTORY OF ART IN COLLEGE JEAN-DE-BREBEUF.
EVENTUALLY THIS LED ME TO BE A GUIDE AT THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
DURING 4 YEARS. WHEN YOU TRAVEL AND VISIT MUSEUM HOW MUCH INTERESTING IT IS WHEN YOU KNOW MORE IN THE ART FIELD.

LET S CELEBRATE YOUR NEW WEB SITE !! congratulations,

                                             Helene

"organize art exhibits in low income area, at public transit hubs and high schools"

I thought that an electronic showcase of this quality, could also be made available and accessible to other geographies....how about school children in Chiapas Mexico, Lima Peru, Laos, Vietnam, etc.

Keep at this Athena!

Hi Athena,

I though I drop a few thoughts here. I believe it is very important what you are doing. You are taking art from incognito to appreciated. You are making at least a few people aware of the art you are writing (very well) about, and thus make it more seen and appreciated (or criticized) than it was before your blog. It is always valuable to comment on art, almost irregardless of what is being said. Comments about art take it from darkness into the light. Others don't need to agree with you, but at least the art you comment is getting a spotlight. That is what art is all about, no? It is about statements and feelings communicated to others. Without communication it is nothing. Similar to your tree in the forest that falls, but remains unheard. The tree DID make a sound, just, nobody heard it. Art that is made but not seen is comparable to that tree. You make the art, which you write about, being heard/seen/felt. There certainly are many many artists around, that produce but are never heard. I have a Brasilian friend who is a sculptor and now a photographer too. She claims she's an amateur, but where is the demarcation between amateur and professional? Money made by the art? I don't think so. If you like to view some of her angles of vision, visit her site at http://www.flickriver.com/photos/italamaria/. I would be curious if you consider the results of her hobby as art, or not. If you do, I would be curious if we could get her some visibility in this part of the world, making her art seen....a bit like trying to make the sound of the tree heard further away.

Cheers, Hans

Joan,
I think you have a very interesting point about exhibiting in low income areas, public transit hubs, and high schools. However, the written word is how we communicate and it should not be exclusive. Art is a visual expression of ideas, and it, too, should not be exclusive. Besides, what are these ideas worth if people don't get them? If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it really make a sound? Sometimes people appreciate a point of view.

Athena,

Just started perusing your blog; enlightening and refreshing. Odd how some folks react with sarcasm when dealing with something new. I am full supporter of breaking down traditional barriers between art and audience/collectors. I traverse both sides: my new oils and pastels will be on display at Centre St. Ambroise, located at 5080 - A - St. Ambroise Street in Montreal. The vernissage is being held on Saturday, November 28.I am also inviting various musicians to perform (another breakdown of the same old).

Having just been to London and Paris, where I spent a great deal of time in museums and galleries, I relish the opportunity to contribute (and read other people's comments) on art and collecting.

And by the way, my degree is in Marketing. I hope I do not offend anyone with this revelation.

Enjoy life to its fullest; keep creating or supporting creativity! And keep blogging.

Cheers!

Athena,

Making art more accessible is not done by M.A.'s and PhD's writing about it. When I write for the Times or the New Yorker I don't do it to make art accessible. If you are honest about your goal, then organize art exhibits in low income area, at public transit hubs and high schools. If you trying to help corporations and individuals acquire art against a consulting fee (which btw is an honest living) don't hide behind " the blog is about making art more accessible".

Why not (about your 20 staff starting a blog and taking pictures with whoever they want. By the way, you're at the Guggenheim, so bet you can do way better than Jim Dine). On a more serious note, the blog is about making art more accessible.

Athena,

I think its great you got an Art History Masters, but what is it you are offering ? I have 20 over staff wit similar qualifications, should they start a blog and get their pictures taken with Jim Dine at a function?
